A Matter of Time

Shed Seven’s A Matter of Time might be their sixth studio album, but it feels more like a homecoming. Released on 5 January 2024 via Cooking Vinyl, it marks the band’s return after more than six years — and coincides neatly with the 30th anniversary of their 1994 debut, Change Giver. Far from a tired retread, though, this is a confident, rejuvenated record that tips its hat to the past while still charging forward.

From the moment Kissing California dropped in July 2023, it was clear that Shed Seven weren’t just ticking the reunion box. Produced by Youth, the band leaned into the sounds that first got them writing songs as teenagers — not out of nostalgia, but out of genuine affection for the records that raised them. The result is a set of tracks that feel tight, immediate, and surprisingly vital for a band three decades deep.

Singles like F:K:H, In Ecstasy, and Starlings bristle with energy, blending arena-sized choruses with a lyrical tone that’s reflective without being self-pitying. And while there’s the occasional Britpop brushstroke, this isn’t a record about recapturing lost youth — it’s about understanding the fire that lit the fuse in the first place.

Even Peter Doherty drops in for closing track Throwaways, lending a dose of romantic grit to a song that feels both wistful and wise. Throughout the album, frontman Rick Witter delivers with purpose, while the band play like they’ve got something to prove — not to critics, but to themselves.

Sure, the album took a sharp drop on the charts after debuting at No.1, but its real value lies elsewhere. This is a record built for fans, not metrics. And in that sense, A Matter of Time delivers: a reminder that while time marches on, some bands can still capture lightning — not in a bottle, but in 12 fresh songs.
