“A Blaze in the Northern Sky” is the second studio album by Norwegian black metal band Darkthrone, released on 26 February 1992 through Peaceville Records. Recorded at Creative Studios in August 1991, it marked Darkthrone’s transition to black metal, containing their initial official foray into the genre. Regarded as a classic within black metal, it forms part of Darkthrone’s “Unholy Trinity” alongside “Under a Funeral Moon” and “Transilvanian Hunger”. Notably, it was the final album featuring bassist Dag Nilsen. In 2020, the album was selected for permanent exhibition at the National Library of Norway due to its cultural significance and pivotal role in the Norwegian black metal movement.
